After BHS. I worked as a deckhand onboard a coastal tugboat for a couple of years prior to attending Massachusetts Maritime Academy.  Upon graduation in 1957,  I married Ann McLean (BHS-1953) and we both headed to Italy for Active Duty with the Navy for 2 years.  We lived in and traveled to Spain, Greece, Turkey and France before then shifting to the Merchant Marines sailing primarily in the Middle and Far East on oil tankers.  I then subscribed to Reserve, in lieu of Active dutyafloat.  I finally "came ashore" in 1965...picked up a MED at Bridgewater State College and entered local politics.  I was elected Selectman/Assessor for the Town of Barnstable.  In 1970 was elected State Senator for the Cape, Plymouth and the Islands District.  Picked up a Law Degree (nights) at Suffolk University.  Was selected President at my alma mater, Mass Maritime in 1981. There I presided over campus growth and academic expansion. Retired from state service in 1991. I have been in maritime consulting and am leading a shipbuilding initiative in the Congress of late. Now semi-retired,  Ann and I are both enjoying our children John Jr. and Patrick, Peter,  their respective spouses and our 6 grandkids.  All live nearby.

Tired of working for someone else, I bought a health club I was attending and created a small chain of clubs, "Lady Diane's Fitness Centers", which was great fun for 8 years. We have been lucky to retire early and continue to travel for fun. A love of reading has caused me to volunteer to help children in middle school and I am also a docent at the Tucson Museum of Art here in Arizona. Our only daughter is an executive for Disney.

I think that I have been lucky.  I have a fine family and good friends.  Two of my children and grandchildren live nearby and one son lives in Seattle.  I visit them often. This past year I sold my house and bought a lovely new condo--certainly a new life style for me and a new adventure.  Happy 50th everyone!!

I truly enjoy our collective bevy of children, step-children and many grand kids who live both nearby and across the country.     After graduation I attended West Point where I played four years of intercollegiate hockey and one year of baseball, giving up the latter because of academic neccessity.  Immediately upon graduating from West Point, in June of 1957, Alice murphy and I were married, a union that produced three children and, ultimately a divorce (unlike many former spouses who both re-marry, we are very friendly and still socialize). My military career was short; the branch I chose, artillery/surface-to-air guided missiles, was certainly a big factor in opting for civilian life.
Although the company I went to work for was subjected to two corporate takeovers, I actually was employed by the same organization for 35 years. Always in sales and marketing, I remained in New England until 1978, at which point I accepted a mid-level management position in Chicago, (my birthplace, incidentally), where my wife Nancy and our infant son made our home until 1992. With an eye on retirement, we purchased a home in West Barnstable and Nancy and son relocated while I resided in Chicago. Shortly thereafter, my employer allowed me to move my office to my home, but the extensive travel got to be too much and I retired in 1996.  My days are busy with a variety of activities and I can truly say that I have not missed the corporate life.

The last ten years I have spent working with special needs children in the area of Math. Adjustment to retitrement has been a challenge! I love the theater, travel, movies, visiting with friends and my children and grandchildren. I get to Conneticut often to get a "family fix" and to visit my money at Foxwood's Casino. I can't believe that 70 is staring me in the face until I look in the mirror! It's been quite a ride and hopefully there is still a lot of track left!

Most of my life I have worked in the construction trade, moving to Florida and leaving the cold weather behind. I am very active in the Marine Corps League here. I enjoy hunting, fishing and my grandchildren. A notable event in my life was when myself and other Korean war veterans returned to Korea, 50 years after the war. We all were treated like kings and we were thanked many times by the people for giving them their freedom.

After graduation I attended Bridgewater State and Greenville College in Greenville, Illionois. I met my husband who was getting his masters in geo physics at the University of St. Louis. We married when he graduated and went to Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico for four years. When he left the service we moved to California and then to Florida, where we have lived since the late 50's. We had four nice children. I finished my degree in math education and ended up teaching Calculus, Statistics, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry and Differential Equations at the high school level and then onto teaching at Palm Beach Community College. (Now if that isn't a hoot. Miss Murray would have fainted if she had known). Along the way I got a masters in guidance and a doctorate in education. i was department chairman for several years. When Don retired we move to West Florida and built a house on a beautiful wooded lot located on the Withlacoochee River, just three miles from the Gulf of Mexico where I am having a lovely time as a watercolorist and where Don always has a project going or a good day on the river. In the summers we pack our rv, a truck/camper and head to Alaska where we have a son and grandson. We have three grandchildren. Sorrowfully, we lost our daughter to a brain aneurysm seven years ago. My, we miss her.

I spent my junior and most of my senior year at BHS. In March of 1952 my Mother and I joined my Father, an Army officer stationed in Yokohama, Japan where I graduated from "Yo Hi".  After returning to the United States I graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston and joined the USAF becoming a pilot flying the F-86, T-38 and the U-2 among others.  While in the Air Force in 1961 I rescued Polly, a Mississippi maiden and married her.  After 11 years in the  Air Force I joined American Airlines as a pilot and enjoyed a 28 year career before retiring in 1994. I still instruct pilots on a part-time basis for American Trans Air (ATA). Polly and I have 3 sons (two are pilots) and 5 grandchildren. We have lived in New London, New Hampshire for the past 30 years.

Since 1969 we have vacationed on Damariscotta Lake in Nobleboro and Jefferson, Maine.  In 1989 we purchased our own cottage in Jefferson, on the lake, where we now hope to spend most of each summer.  Although I am saddened to learn of those of us who have died,  I am greatly excited at the prospect of seeing so many of the class once more.  I look forward to seeing each and all of you in September 2002.

The day I was old enough to enlist in the Massachusetts National Guard...I did so.  I drilled in Hyannis and Camp Edwards.  Also in the unit were a couple of other Osterville "kids".  One night I was sitting in my car with classmates Jack Short and Neil Whiteley in front of Wimpy's Restaurant when we heard on the car radio that my guard unit had been activated for duty in Korea the very next day.  Activation was in May 1951 and I never got to graduated from BHS.  After two years of active duty as a Technical Sergeant  I returned home to Cape Cod and went to work at the Wianno Golf Course, in Osterville. Over the years I attended regional, national and international seminars as a member of the Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America.  Subsequently became greenskeeper there and retired from Wianno after 40 years of service in 1993.  I am  single,  never married,  enjoys cycling, like to ski and am into biking.  I am  pleased to be included in our class list for the re-union.
Ritter, Agnes (Betty)  [Huffman]   (From Jeanne Peters)
Agnes died June 1981 of cancer.  Jeanne remembers "Betty" when she and Jeannette first moved to Hyannis.  Our family
rented a small house behind Agnes.  Agnes came knocking on our door and invited us to walk to our new school with her.  It made it so much easier.  We became good freinds and remained that way until "Betty" passed away.  Agnes married Ray Huffman from Hickory, NC.  She met him when he served with the Army at Otis Air Force base on the Cape.  She and Ray
raised three children.

After completing high school I worked in resort hotels in Florida, Maine and Boston. In 1954 I tried my own lawn service business but discovered that the grass was really greener on the other side of the street. This led me to change professions and I attended a Funeral Service Institute, graduating in 1960. From 1974 to 1983 I worked in a Boston funeral home.  I then worked at a ceramic tile business in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts  for the next fourteen years. I left Cape Cod to continue my work as a mortuary scientist in Maryland and retired in 1998.  My wife Joy and I have one daughter and two grandchildren and we are enjoying semi-retirement. I now work 3-4 days a week as a "professional" hearse driver. "Love those Cadillacs!" Notable events in my life: I just missed being caught in the center of a tornado and I was within two miles of the recent attack on the Pentagon.
